Without a doubt, mashed potatoes are one of the world’s ultimate comfort foods! They make the perfect side to any meat dish, and can warm you up on a cold day. So, it is no surprise that as soon as the weather begins to get cold every year, my kids start to request mashed potatoes and gravy.
It took me many years to figure out the perfect mashed potatoes recipe. And I have to say–the reason this recipe is so good has little to do with the ingredients. As you can see, they are pretty standard as far as ingredients go. Nope–for this recipe, its all about the prep of the potatoes! If you have some extra time the night before you make these, slice and soak the potatoes overnight in ice cold water. Then, before cooking them the next day, drain and rinse well. This will remove a lot of excess starch, and starch is what can make mashed potatoes gummy in texture. You don’t want that! I promise, that little extra step is well worth your time. You will never have gummy mashed potatoes again! These turn out perfectly fluffy every time.
Pair this dish with some homemade gravy or a large pat of butter, and you’ve got yourself the fluffiest, most comforting bowl of mashed potatoes ever.
